ORCA OceanWatchers - Seafarers Monitoring

Not Enrolled

Welcome to the ORCA OceanWatchers course! The online training course, along with a the ORCA OceanWatchers app (available on iPhone and Android) will enable you to collect effort-based data about whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans), wherever you are in the world.

ORCA are delighted to offer ship's crew training for, and access to, the OceanWatchers app. Data collected via the app will be added to ORCA’s data portal, to help us understand the distributions and abundance of cetaceans and insights into their ecology.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the benefits of data collection, to compliment conservation efforts
  • Outline why collecting data on an effort-based approach is so important
  • Navigate throughout the ORCA OceanWatchers app; including finding species fact-files and viewing previous surveys and maps
  • Confidently collect data on a range of environmental conditions when conducting a survey from land or at sea
  • Confidently collect data on any marine mammals sighted; the species, group size, number of calves, behaviour
  • Apply this knowledge to conduct a full OceanWatchers survey at sea; including starting, finishing and uploading a survey
